Event Description

It is a great pleasure to bring to your attention a charity ride that is very close to the work that my colleagues here at the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases and myself do in the lab. The Jim Hunter ALS Cycle for a Cure is holding its 3rd Annual ride this year on Sunday September 27th, 2015 starting at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham. The goal of the ride is to help raise awareness and the funds necessary to support research that is crucial to discovering treatments and, importantly, a cure for ALS.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gherig's disease) is a rapid onset adult neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by the death of nerve cells that control muscles, resulting in a loss of mobility, speech, and eventually the ability to breathe. ALS is a terminal disease and there are currently no effective treatment options for patients living with ALS. The lifespan of an individual with ALS is typically 2-5 years from diagnosis, and there are approximately 2500-3000 Canadians currently living with ALS. Researching a cure for ALS is no small undertaking and will require massive collaboration from multiple clinics and labs all around Canada and the rest of the world. Therefore, we must all come together and tackle this disease with team conviction!

The Jim Hunter ALS Cycle for a Cure ride consists of a 20km or 75km (actually) route option. For the past 2 years, I’ve ridden up to the event from the beaches resulting in a 130km total for the day. Thankfully, the event is always well catered by the Angus Glen Golf Club for both breakfast and lunch and so you do not have to worry about the calories burned!

Although there is no obligatory minimum sponsorship required, ALS Canada has asked that all riders set a goal of raising $750 to help raise the funds necessary to make ALS a treatable instead of terminal disease. A great option would be to start a team and raise as much as possible as a group! I have already registered with some of my colleagues under the team name “Wheelie Good Scientists” - no pun intended, of course.

Please visit http://www.alscycleforacure.ca/ to register and/or donate to the ride. Your support, however you are able to do so, would be greatly appreciated.

Lets make the weekend of September 26/27th a charity ride weekend for the club! :)

Thanks a bunch,

Paul

Hi everyone! I created a team called "Beaches Cycling Club (BCC)" for anyone (including friend and family) wishing to join and represent BCC. Whether or not we ride together, we can still raise money as a BCC group. Just search for the team when you register online :)

Great call Andrea. I'm hoping that I can attend (I worked for Jim Humter's wife, Heather, so this event is personal). I just need to wait until I know if and when I'm flying out that day before I commit. Either way I'll donate through the team.

Sounds great James! Would be great to ride with you if you are home in time :)

Delighted to have your support, everyone! Thanks a million for this.

James: Would be fantastic if you could come out again. Last year's ride was epic and it was, of course, great to meet you at this event! :)

I just booked a 6:22pm flight out, so should have plenty of time now!  May have to drive up/back instead of ride though to ensure I see the family for at least a bit that day though.

Paul, as fun as last year's ride was...I wouldn't mind something a little less epic, lol...that was an insane amount of rain...but I guess going 35km/hr+ for that first 10k  helped stay warm!

Great news, James!

Agreed! I don't reckon you'd have much trouble with that pace these days, sir. :)

Cool thing: The Sunnybrook ALS clinic is going to join our lab's team, so we're now known as "Sunnybrook/UofT Duo".
