I'm looking to either rent or buy a new/used travel bag to take my bike with me to NS for a couple weeks in August.  Any leads/suggestions from group members are highly welcomed.  Forewarned - my "bike budget" is tight this year, so may need to go rental route and hold off buying new for next - but willing to listen to suggestions people have.  If it was in the budget I was leaning towards the EVOC Bike Travel bag (seems to get good reviews) but any advice on my "lifetime" bag is greatly appreciated for whenever I do buy one.

here is an article on bags/cases that might help

personally I prefer a case for max protection

Hi James. A while back I bought a K-edge mount from a guy who actually rents bags and/or boxes. He can also do the packing for you, if needed. I'll look for his business card and if I can find it I'll PM you the deets soon, ok? :)
That'd be great Christophe! Thank you.

Good morning, James. I found the info & just sent you a PM.  Hope it helps. Have a good day.  :)

I have a bike bag you can borrow for your trip. It will cost you one can of Steigl.

Its a proper bike bag, and has been used for flights etc but it is not as sturdy as a box.

You are welcome to come and have a look and see if you think it is suitable.

That would be amazing Simon.  Let me know what days/evenings would be best for you for me to stop by and take a look.  Thanks again!

can we communicate by regular email? This website doesn't work well on my phone.

Hi James

I have had experience renting a Bike Box Allan from Mr Ritter at Bike Box Rentals ($40 deposit by e-interac and $20 on day of pickup). He is located around midtown (Davisville and Yonge). The box was in reasonable shape, price included a one-hour live instruction with my bike, written instructions, packing ties, gloves, and foam stuff. I needed to remove the wheels, pedals, and handlebars. The seat and seat post stayed attached--very important.

The bike survived the opening of Airport U.S. and Canadian customs without my presence. I was abit worried as the key part that ensures the integrity of this box is the centre post that must be re-aligned.

Ritter sells the boxes too but recommends renting before buying. He also rents and sells the Trico ironcase and Thule 699. They are heavier and bigger and hard for customs to use. My coach recommends a soft box that acts as an air bag system as it is the most protective and lightest but is not customs friendly in terms of ease of closing without my presence. I think that should be a key consideration when buying a box. So it all depends on what you need the box for, frequency of travel, and whether customs is going to touch the box. Scicon is usually the reference point if money was no object however.

Hope this helps.

For anyone looking to rent a bike bag, Peter Oyler at Mindset Cycling (Sunrise and O'Connor) is offering them for rent - 1 week $75.00, he will pack your bike and unpack when you return for $50.00 - Fr $125.00 your bike is taken care of (of course you have to put it together at your desination).

These are the bags that Peter is renting
