Tech assistance - the black hole that is bottom brackets

Hi all,

Hoping someone with more bike tech knowledge than me can help out here.  I am considering moving my CX bike (Steeple X) crankset to a Shimano based one (105 or Ultegra) so that I can swap my left side power meter between from my road bike to it during cross season.  The bike is currently has a FSA Gossamer CX crankset on it and, from what I understand, a BB86 bottom bracket.  My loose googling seems to imply that I need to switch out the bottom bracket in order to make this work - but that's where I start getting a bit hesitant as I don't want to start ordering parts that won't fit.

So - has anyone ever done this?  What are my best value choices to get this done?  I'm guessing that changing a bottom bracket will be outside my tool range - so who would you all trust to do this for you (if it was you?).  Finally, does anyone have a spare 170mm 105 or Ultegra crankset laying around to help me get this done on a cheapish budget?

James,

take a look at the url below:

any of the ones that say they are for Shimano should be what you need. You could also call them to confirm.

Cheers,

Cody

Thanks Cody!

Hey James, not sure if you have addressed this yet but nice to hear you plan to swap out an FSA crankset for a Shimano one, at least the 105 for sure for CX as these are workhorse cranksets. BB86 is one type of threadless BB standard that is a pressfit.

This means you would properly need a bearing remover tool (as the current bearings are pressed in), a special type of hammer, to hammer the bearing remover tool, a bike stand to hold the bike (hopefully by the seatpost), and a headset press to install the new bearings and adapters. Other tools needed is something to remove the crank and you may or may not need grease depending on the new bearing type.

Also, once the old bearings and cups are out, they are cannot be used anymore. For a new BB to fit in place of the BB86, there are Ultegra and Dura ace versions. Both are great, will work with 105 or Ultegra, prices are similar... shops usually use either or depending on availability if there is no preference.  Here is a GCN video that might help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOJAKBQOU9U

Or for the sake of convenience and cost to purchase these tools, you could go to any of these shops: Switchback, The 11, or MEC. The 11 (recommended) sometimes have lightly used 105 and Ultegra cranksets just lying around.

Hope this helps, Tim.
