After a solid beer night this past Thursday, I thought I would post about our new Thursday setup!
After some discussions with several members, we decided to move the Thursday Hillicious ride to the morning for a few reasons:
- turnout was diminishing in the evenings
- Brimley is getting too busy on summer evenings to be considered safe
- the format wasn't necessarily appealing to everyone
- the morning air is fresh and traffic is light!
The 5:30am start time is recommended but not necessarily set in stone. The idea is to have everyone finish up the ride and have the option to be home by 7am and/or stop for coffee with whoever is available.
Since Brimley is used on Thursday mornings by Morning Glory Cycling Club on odd months, we will use Brimley on even months this season (April, June, August). The first Thursday hill ride this season will begin on Thursday, April 20th.... we will start with Brimley and some cool new options in May. :)
Other options we will try out in May:
- a Beaches Hill Loop
- a Guildwood ride
- a Bayview loop
Looking forward to this season!
This whole plan sounds great! Well done. It certainly makes it easier for me to join the group.
hey Paul, this is not April's 1st joke, is it? :) is there an option to have this ride at Brimley on evenings?
Hi Vladimir. My apologies, but this is not an April Fool's joke. It was expected that some members would still prefer to ride Brimley in the evenings. However, there will no longer be a formal BCC road ride in the evenings on Thursday for the safety reasons on Brimley among the other reasons stated above. If you are interested in keeping it going, I encourage you to organize an informal ride since I'm sure there are others that would join you.
Good reminder on the lights. They are indeed mandatory and no exceptions can be made there. Although not required, reflective and hi-viz clothing are encouraged. Despite this, we will be structuring the ride/route with safety in mind.
5:30 is scary. 6:00 maybe?
Hi Andre, hope you're well. We'll figure out a balance but try to guarantee a minimum of 1 hour of riding before heading home for those in a time crunch. I know there are people interested in both an earlier (5:30am) and a later (6am) start time. Anyone opposed to 5:45 compromise?
