Ultimate "skills" session! Joyride 150 (Markham)- Friday, June 9 (10am-2pm)

Hi all- We're planning a special event for this Friday, June 9.  (The fact that it's a PA day for TDSB kids is an added bonus!)  The plan is to meet at Joyride 150 in Markham (Link below) at 10am.  Joyride is an indoor bike “playground” that will allow us all to build some new skills, and much more importantly, it should be insanely  fun!  Any bikes are allowed, but Mountain or BMX are recommended.  We are planning to get a group rate for 3 hours (between 10:30am and 1:30pm).   This means that…See More

Tour for Kids 2012

Posted on August 20, 2012 at 12:56pm 10 Comments

Sorry- no pictures- but I thought I'd send along a quick summary of my Tour for Kids adventure.

This was my first T4K's- and I have to say that it is an incredible event, with outstanding cyclists and volunteers.  Most importantly, it is an outstanding cause.  While we did not have a BCC team per say, I came across several BCCer's including Arn, Albert, Andrew, Joel, Bruce, Michael, Ang, and Julie Toole (who I had a chance to ride with a couple of times and is incredibly fast…

Can't attend Watt's Up tomorrow (I'm a bit under the weather) so if anyone wishes to take my spot, please give Dan a head's up...

BCC as ambassadors

Hey all-

Ok, I admit, I haven't been out with the crew much this year (it's been an insane summer!) This aside, the club still means a lot to me and I'm always so proud to say that I ride with BCC. It's why I find this post a bit difficult, but necessary. This past week, as a pedestrian, I managed to see two BCCer's on the road, (both riding solo) which is always great to see. Although I saw the two at separate times, I witnessed both engaged in reckless and disrespectful…

Hey Dave,

Sorry about the short notice for this Saturday's ride. But there will be other training rides. We will be doing 2-3 hours (almost no traffic lights & very few stop signs). Bring some food to eat on the bike and 2 bottles.

Re: R4K versus T4K... I found them to be 2 very different events. Each was hard in different ways. But on balance, i really prefer T4K.
Tour for Kids is waaay better organized. The speeds of groups are way more realistic in T4K. 33kph for racers. 31k for racers that are a little slower. 29k for strong riders. 27k for most people. And 25k is the slow group who may get bussed to the finish line because of timing out. Endurance (and recovery for DAys 2, 3 & 4) is important. So is hill training. I didn't do enough hills in 2009 so i suffered on the T4K ride.

R4K has a 35k pace (unrealistic), 30k speed (pretty stinking fast) and 25k speed (too slow). While T4K was hilly... R4K route was even hillier! As for organization... wow the first 50km of R4K was soe of the most chaotic riding. Ride organizers must feel that marshalling a ride is for wimps. :-)

Bottom line... talk to others besides me and really think about T4K. As i said, i think it is a more satisfying ride. In any event... you are welcome to join us on this Saturday or other training rides (in May, June & July).

Hey Dave,
This Saturday, there's a training ride for our Tour for Kids (T4K) team. We are planning on a 2-3 hour ride. Not sure if you're interested in T4K but... if you'd like to join us... it should be good fun.

The weather forecast for next Saturday is supposed to be good. As I’ve mentioned the team is 50/50 between BCC and non-BCC riders (so there are some faces you will not recognize). The ride starts at Elgin Mills so you will need to drive (or get a lift) to the start. I will be giving Albert a ride.

Let me know I you want to join us on Saturday at 9am. Thanks,

Arn

Hi Dave,
After you return from the Bike Show, drop by Murphy's Law for bar snacks and beer. Here's the info about the Tour 4 Kids Pub night (8pm, Mar 5 @ Murphy's Law).
Cap'n Andrew, myself and a bunch of riders returning from the 2009 Tour for Kids will be bending elbows, er planning the 2010 T4K season. It is open to all interested riders.
You've heard some of us talk about the fun we had last year. Come out and find out what its all about.
FABulous Irish Pubs (who owns Murphy’s Law) has generously offered to provide pub grub to all. Sign up to the event on the BCC website if you're coming. Preferably before Saturday night so I can provide numbers to Murphy's Law for catering.
Hope to see you at Murphy's on March 5th.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for posting this ride on the BCC site. I was a really great ride. Although I gotta do more hill training before next year's R4K!! Thanks for dropping back to pace me back to the group before lunch. That was greatly appreciated. Glad I was able to repay the favour. Hope you knee is better.
