BCC Pre-Season Destination Training Camp (South Carolina)

BCC Friends,

During the off-season a number of BCC members expressed interest in destination bike tours and training camps.

I have been in contact with another team that I have done destination bike tours with (Team Revolution, Klienburg) and they have scheduled a team climbing camp through Trek Travel in Greenville, South Carolina for end of April.

I have proposed doing the same camp to the BCC Race Team members for preparation ahead of the Road Racing Season at end…

Jason Shuker - Race Across America (RAAM) 2018

Fellow BCC’rs;

In September of 2016, my support team (Bruce Day & Steve Jones) and I completed the Ohio RAAM Challenge, and subsequently qualified for the Race Across America (RAAM) annual event.  It was an amazing experience and one I will not soon forget.  However, with that challenge behind us, it was time to think about what’s next.  After careful consideration, the team decided it would best to hold off on the RAAM 2017 event.  Hence, we deferred our intent to…

Holiday bike-drive for bikes to at risk youth in Regent Park

Dear BCC friends,

If you are missing a good and very worthy idea for doing some serious good 'secret santa' work this season look no further - we're fundraising for donating bikes to youth in Regent Park... and in that process also funding the athletic programs provided to those youth groups in the challenging hours of 3 to 6 each day between school's end and parents arriving home.

Heading into the "off-season" - inside options

I have to use quotes for "off-season" because many of us will continue to ride outside for quite some time if this fall/winter turns out anything like last year.  However, we are dealing with less sunlight and the weather may not cooperate as much, making those outside rides tough to schedule and stick to.  But we still want to improve our power/skills and enjoy the camaraderie that we've built up over the spring and summer.  That's where the trainer comes in, and love it or hate it - many…

The Silver State 508

First paragraph is the readers digest version -

Wow, the Silver State 508 has been completed and I would have to say it was a tremendous success. We covered the “508 miles” in 32 hours and 8 minutes - the clock started when we left the Atlantis Casino in Reno at 7am on Saturday, kept ticking until we had travelled to Eureka and back. Linda Spina and I won the 2x Mixed division and we were 6th overall amongst all 2 person teams (20 teams entered,…

SPIN FOR LIMBS - 5th Edition - 2016

So all week the weather forecast was looking decidedly dodgy for Saturday and our 5th Edition of Spin For Limbs, and sadly for once it was correct. The only rain clouds for miles around were set to drop on us for our annual charity ride. I wondered how many would riders would show up considering the remote start, the…

Final week leading up to Tour For Kids

I may not have been making the trip East to ride with you but I have been getting out and riding...a lot. I have even done Rattlesnake a couple of times. I think I am feeling ready for Tour For Kids...and have even found someone a couple of people to ride with. Sadly, I did not get any nibbles from my fellow BCCers...I will still proudly wear our kit :-)

I am still looking for sponsorship toward the cause. I am doing this to raise money for Camp Ooch, Camp Trillium, and Camp Quality.…

Tour de Terra Cotta Report

TL;DR summary: First place in my age group, experienced new levels of pain and hurt.

For the third year in a row, I participated in the Tour de Terra Cotta.

Because I haven't trained as much this year (only one BCC Tuesday), I went in the short 26km race again.  It seems to get harder each…

Looking for support...ride buddies or sponsorship

In March, I registered for Tour For Kids. I posted it as an event hoping that I would get some keen BCCers to join me in the fun. So far, no nibbles :-(

I am doing this event because I have had some students deal with Leukemia, either personally or through a family member. I felt that this would be my way of recognizing their struggle. To learn more about this Tour, please visit my page …

Preston Street Criterium Recap

Preston Street Criterium – Race Report

Hot off the heels of my latest race (no literally – it was 40 degrees in the salad bowl / region of Ottawa known as little Italy!), I present to you the following recon:

After a week of back and forth and obsessively checking the pre-registration list (you know you do it.), I pulled the trigger on Preston Street Criterium registration. Holy crap, an hour of racing at the Scarlem Crit pace? Couldn’t finish an early Midweek last June at this…

Bike power calculations

Hi all. Given my spate of flats lately (always at the bottom of a descent...) I was interested in how much I was heating up my rims through braking. So I pulled together a quick power calculator. I know there's a number of engineers among us, so thought folks might find this interesting (sorry if this is a "been there, done that" thing - I couldn't find anything online that worked well)

The cells in orange are inputs. The coefficients of wind resistance and rolling resistance…
