BCC @ the Children's Breakfast Clubs Event at Humber College - Saturday June 20th 2015

Another successful year with this initiative.  Thanks to all that came out to help out with the event.  Turns out it was super fun, and most importantly we were able to help prepare the kids for the race in September.

Thanks to Sandra for helping liaison with the Event co-ordinators.

Please take the time to share your perspective.

Cheers,

Dan.

We had almost 20 volunteers.... great participation. The BCC team is making a difference to children in our community. That's even more important than being the first to the top of the hill.

That was the best day ever! The kids were awesome!! I am really glad that my daughter Abigail came with me for her first BCC experience. Her first BCC group ride was on the way home. Thanks to everyone who participated, but especially Sandra for making it happen.

What a lovely day! Alexx and I rode up the street to meet the gang as they rolled along Danforth at a comfortable pace. What a treat to ride through the various neighbourhoods in the heart of the city sans traffic at 7am!

We got to our destination well ahead of the 9am start, giving us a chance to get briefed on the day. Some of us helped find the kids the correct-sized helmet, and how to wear it properly, others assisted on getting that bike fit just right. Sage and Jeff did demos on how to change flats and a rotating crew chaperoned groups out on road along with police on bikes and motos. Sparky the firehouse dog was there for the safety segment and Jason the Argonaut mascot was there to show everyone how not to be safe out on the road by repeatedly crashing a way too small bike into things.

My real connection for the day came after a chat with traffic PR guy, Sgt Hugh Smith, of the Toronto Police Service. I recognized him just before 10-year-older Ricciardo asked us to help him ride a bike. He was quiet, thoughtful and eager to conquer this difficult new life task. We tried for at least half an hour (and I think in vain) to help him get it. I saw Ricciardo later on at lunch and asked him if he got it. He said, "yes," quite sheepishly. I'm especially looking forward to seeing Ricciardo's progress through the summer, rain or shine, at the big Tour de Black Creek in September. I'm also expecting another big BCC turn out on that date.
