We LOVE You KELD! Get Well soon!

Hey all,

Ok so I saw Simon's Instagram this morning that the boys were going to do a 200Km day to Collingwood and I thought AWESOME!

I was surprised to get a message from an old friend Matt Wallis who is now a fire fighter with a picture of a busted up bike.  Pic Matt sent me from the fire truck(Above)

Turns out on their way up, the small group of guys had a run in with a car making a left out to go southbound as they were headed north.  Robin and Simon jammed on the brakes and so did Keld, but he wasn't so lucky as he hit the back of the car and got catapulted and landed on his knee.  Fire and Ambulance were there within 5 mins and Simon made a call to Sunnybrook to an Orthropedic surgeon friend of his to give him a heads up on Keld's situation.  Needless to say his bike is not functional(Keld's Bike at the Fire Hall  - below)

I wanted to post this to let everyone know as I am sure if you have met or ridden with Keld and his wife Petra they are some of the nicest people around!  This is such and unfortunate event.  So I wanted to support Keld in this time and help him in his recovery with the support of the club.  BCC is one big family!

Petra will get in touch me me and keep me abreast of his progress and I will let you all know.

Oh, and of course in the Keld's style, he's like "You guys better not turn back!"

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Tried to post an update earlier but it's not here so don't know what happened. Keld had surgery at 130am and it went well but he had a bit to put back together and even then there were pieces that were too damaged to repair. I suspect that's code for "bionic knee to beat your wife up brimley" talk.

We're being discharged this evening which is great but long road ahead. He's quite nauseous still and can't keep food down. He managed a few hops on the crutches but it's hard ... His whole right leg is immobilized and he's of course sore from somersaulting over a car!!!! But we're going home and he'll heal ... That's the bottom line !!!! Yay!!!

The driver will be charged with reckless driving, six points and $500 fine. We don't really care, We're just happy he lived to tell about it !

Ride safe all!! And thank you so much for the kind thoughts!!!

$500, really? That's an insult.
What about paying for the bike?

I hope he recovers soon and he will be riding back with us

Sorry to hear about this terrible crash Keld. You are in great hands and wish you a speedy recovery and return to your fine form. Take care my friend.

Marco - fine and bike payment separate issues, but yes - the driver is liable for the damages for the bike.  They're also potentially liable for a health related costs - but that's where it gets complicated and involves lawyers duking it out.

Keld - first, get well. But seriously consider pursuing this through the system.  You have a police charge, witnesses, and unfortunately upcoming rehab bills (along with the bike, which is pretty secondary at this stage).  It will also help get a bad driver off the road, or at least make it very expensive for him to get future insurance.

I was so saddened to learn of the incident Friday on Instagram, and hope that Keld gets better day by day. Take good care of him Petra, and take time to look after yourself in the process.

Thanks for updating us on Keld's condition and we look forward to riding with you soon.

Hi All.  Just an update that Keld came home last night around 5pm and we had an uneventful night.   He slept well and was in relatively little pain (unless I moved his leg the wrong way then I promise you there was pain and I knew about it ;) ).  Today he's still been sleeping a lot and is good and fortified on some happy pills.  He's keeping food down although not much of an appetite.  Every day he'll get stronger, of that we're sure!

He cannot put weight on the leg for at least 4 weeks.  He has a followup appt in 2 weeks but I think that's just for an xray, I don't think PT begins until week 4.  We're kind of gearing up for 8 weeks of relatively little mobility but I'm thinking, knowing Keld, that he'll do more than your average Joe (no offense Joe).  We'll just have to see how it goes but for sure, we'll be mindful of the rules the docs give us as there is nothing more important than healing right!

Have had to cancel plans to go to Denmark at the end of the month and are unsure about other plans we had for August as well.  As deflating as that is, the prospect of him not being here is 1000x worse so if all we have to do is cancel a few plans and be homebodies for this summer then so be it.

I'm sure Keld will be up for visitors in a few days time.  He is Mr. Social so I'm sure will be craving people at some point soon, but for now, we're just quarantining him to make sure he starts this healing process off right!

Thanks so much for all of your support, he'll be back, for sure.
