My friend Steve Beatty, rider from Neworld Cycling club, is the Dad of one of my patients. He and I founded Spin For limbs four years ago and run it out of his home town in Burlington. Today Steve asked me if I could get him a BCC jersey, because he wants to wear one to ride in. Guess why? You know why, but I'll tell you!!
It's because year after year riders from BCC have supported Spin For Limbs through the Annual event that we hold each September, as well as the Neworld event "Tour de Friends" held every july (also in support of Spin For Limbs). Steve has seen again and again that BCC riders are incredibly enthusiastic, sociable, quality riders who ride groups safely, with great respect. He asked me today if this dynamic was normal for our club. It then occurred to me that not all cycling clubs are like ours...
This year was a huge breakthrough for us at Spin For Limbs. In excess of 20 BCC riders came down to Burlington for the 100km and 50km ride, and we out-numbered the home riders by quite some margin! What a great effort! I am truly grateful for Dan, Paul and Christophe for championing this event, and building it into the BCC calendar. Not only do we get a great route to ride through spectacular countryside in beautiful fall weather, but by supporting Spin For limbs BCC is instrumental in helping build this charity year on year. Many charity rides fold after year 3 due to lack of interest, donor fatigue and many other reasons. Spin For Limbs has just entered its 4th year with double the riders from last year. Double the number of families with patients and colleagues from SickKids who came for the walk and BBQ, and we also raised a whopping $80,000 this year, which is more than the first three years added together!
I am constantly inspired by the children I treat, to see how well they and their families deal with the hardships of multiple limb reconstruction surgeries, and how they bounce back so strongly. I got the chance to ride my bike with one of my 9 year old patients today, who two years ago underwent 8 months of limb reconstruction surgery. It is for these reasons that I am committed to continue running Spin For Limbs, and I feel that with the amazing support of BCC behind me, that Spin For Limbs is destined to keep growing to build into an integral part of the fall cycling calendar.
