2013 Provincials CX Race @ Albion Hills - Results and Pics

Hey all,

I went to support our riders on Sunday Nov 3rd 2013 this past weekend.  Great day to race as you can see by the pics.  This was a two day back to back event.  Saturday was the crappier of the two days... I'll let JRod, Mike, Jeff & Paul explain the details.

Saturday Results - Paul M Podiums! in Elite 4,  Jason places 5th in M3

Sunday Results - Marco and Jamie Podiums!

Enjoy!

Great photos! Congratulations, you guys! Now I have to decide which photo of Jamie I'm going to get blown up into an 8' tall inspirational poster for the wall in front of my trainer...

Paul, Jason, Mike and I raced in the early event on Saturday, the weather was cool, drizzly and slippery.  Twists, turns, steep climbs, the ever interesting spiral, and a soft sand made this another fun day.  Great to see Mike out for his first cyclocross race!   Fun and tough isn't it!

Our race started with a gravel straight then an uphill sweep to the right, keep turning until going back toward the start, still climbing, get to the first descent, careful it is about 24% grade and slippery with a sharp left at the bottom.  Keep turning to go back up the hill at a little easier spot to the "spiral", loop in and around a few times, then loop back , around a few times then out, back down into the ravine, do some up and downs on the opposite side, and so on, onto a fast straight, a short steep down 180 turn back up, straight, jump a few logs, climb, descent to the beach, ride the sand, back to the grass, climb then loop around the parking lot thru the muck to the start line.  repeat 4 times.

The loop was about 3 km and you are working the whole time.

Our race was a mix of abilities.  The class of the race was very fast - he broke away early and finished in 44.5 minutes, 4 minutes ahead of the next riders!  To put that in perspective, the next group included Paul M and we know how fast Paul goes!

Congratulations to Marco and Jamie for great results on Sunday.  They used the same course run in reverse direction.

The race was pretty fun.  I didn't do a lot preparation, so I knew it would be more of a ride in the country, rather than a hard-fought race - but I'm glad I did it.

I'm not much of a bike handler, so when it started raining on the drive up - I thought it might make for an unpleasant ride.  However, it didn't rain during the race and the course really didn't seem that wet.  The road around the parking lot was muddy, but that was very flat - so no big deal.

Congrats to all the other racers.

Sorry I haven't posted anything about this. I really want to sell CX practice and/or racing as one of my best decisions this season. I had a really long post in mind, but I've sorta forgotten the details of the fun after a couple of weeks away at a conference so I'll just keep it short.

Anyway, what can I say? CX is just about as much fun as someone can have on a weeknight or weekend. After having done the road racing scene for the first time this season, I was really concerned about trying CX out because it's a little more technical and I was afraid to look like a fool. Well, let me tell you: The vibe is really awesome and looking like a fool is exactly what CX is about! Everyone is really fun and positive. I really felt that I could act like a kid on (and off) a bike again and this was encouraged by both the spectators, organizers, and riders (and most importantly, with my cycling buddies at practice). Importantly, it's really difficult to get hurt because if you happen to fall, it's usually on wet grass and if you're really lucky you may get a little muddy too. Oh, and the race organizers (and JRod and/or Jamie) purposely set the course up so that muddiness is not just part of it, but a requirement! For anyone who loves cycling, CX is a rite of passage! You may not like the whole racing scene, but it would be great to have some more of the BCC membership show up to a CX practice once the season calms down. It's a no-drop, park-circling setup so there's it really suits anyone who loves to get out and act like an idiot (in a good way that is) with the rest of us cyclophiles.

Kudos to all the BCC racers for coming out and having fun during the week and at the races. Moreover, congrats to those that exceeded their personal bests or continued to consistently kick serious butt.
