Well, what a day! 6 of us started at 6:30am from timmies (we moved the time, where were you Jamie?) and Jason joined us at Exhibition place. Mark was seemingly making his sunday debut (not really but certainly the riding legs were going to come under fire), Alex was prepped and ready with his latest and greatest route. Paul and Ian were primed for some excellent pulling while Charles and I were glad to be along for the ride.
As has been the case over the past couple of rides, the weather cooperated fully with light winds and overcast weather, which made for fast paced riding. With rotating pacelines (semi-captured on film) the 7 of us motored very quickly to schomberg. A nice little coffee shop welcomed us into this little hamlet. Some very good coffee and decent pastries. Little did we know the fun was about to begin.
The exit out of schomberg was easy and we were back on the roads heading east at an excellent clip of 40+ with a bit of a tail wind. We were going so good that we missed the 7th conc turn south and so we had to do some backtracking - a sign of things to come. Heading south on 7th the paved roads gave way to gravel roads (somebody forgot to tell Alex we weren't riding cyclocross bikes). As we passed 18th concession, Alex urged us forward - but wait alex, what about that "NO EXIT" sign at the side of the road? Damn the torpedos, trust me fellas. Well as the photos will attest, trust him we did and sure enough the road did end and had no exit. What to do? Grab a picture of course! What next - enter the forest of course - (somebody forgot to tell Alex we weren't riding suspension bikes). As our pictures and video attest, deep into the belly of the forest we went, only sure of one thing - we were going south. Well the forest did end, we did find the other side and we did get back on the road. By this time, Mark was having some challenges with his rear derailluer leaving him with 3 gears. At king road and weston road, he decided to go it alone and so we kicked things back up. With a pit stop at elgin mills and leslie, we managed to finally get home after about 6 hours of total elapsed time.
My stats were as follows: 147.3km, moving speed of 31.8km/h, top speed of 67.4km/h and avg power of 231, avg heart rate of 143.
Thanks all for a safe and enjoyable ride with some big belly laughs in the middle of the forest. It is amazing that we had no flats during a day that probably had 15km of gravel travel and 1.5km of traversing through a forest.
