BCC and twESPBCC crush the Mother’s Day O-Cup!

This past weekend involved a very cool 6-corner criterium up in Markham at the Honda Canada headquarters.

On the Saturday, I attended the Youth Cup to help as a volunteer. This was an amazing experience. I was given the cool duty of marshalling the SW corner, waving a flag to signal that the kids had cleared the corner safely. Watching and cheering on the burgeoning young talent that Ontario has is a wonderful opportunity. The first round of racing included a time trial around the crit followed by categorized racing (U11, U13, U15, U17 boys and girls). Must say, it was cool to see Mike McInnis' son Connor have a great race, placing 2nd in the U11 category (sorry, I do not have a pic… please post if you can Mike). I highly recommend people get involved with the youth racing scene to pay it forward.... these will be the riders that represent cycling in the future. It is very cool to see just how good these kids are and how devoted they are to their craft.

On the Sunday, an O-Cup was held where BCC and our trade team collaboration twESPBCC were extremely well represented across categories.  With super strong riding and awesome teamwork, we achieved podiums or came darn close for every race!

I raced the Elite Men 1/2 race. While it was a tough race with the big NW wind and intense team tactics, our twESPBCC teammate Andrew House made the early break and hung on to an extremely respectable 4th place finish! Special thanks to Ivana (and her awesome son) for providing her wheels as spares and for sticking around to hang out with my family and root me on.

Here are some pics of the podium (in order of race start time):

Victor Addis wins the Men’s Elite 4 race with a solo break. He managed to lap the field all by himself!

John Lobraico wins the Men’s Elite 3 by decisively taking the bunch sprint!

Aubrie De Sylva shows off her track power by finishing 2nd in the Women’s Elite 3 race!

Ivan Gotzeva has a fantastic first criterium race, placing an impressive 3rd in the Women’s Master B field!

Please feel free to comment and/or add pics. It would be great to hear the inner workings of each race as it unfolded.

This was actually a really fun race.  I'm not a huge fan of criteriums, as they don't really suit me that well, but the wide pavement and corners made for a good race.

I unfortunately got a flat on the corner which carried over that small curb or 'lip'.  Wasn't able to square up well and take it lightly so the impact blew my tire.  Figures the one race I didn't bring spare wheels to is the one I get a flat right beside the wheel drop!  I was still happy as I felt like I raced this one well and was holding position exactly where I wanted to be with 6 laps to go.  live and learn.

By the way, here's a video of the M3/E4 race!  Give's you a feel for what we were up to.  it was about a 40km/hr average speed for the race.

I watched the E4/M3 race and the start of the E3 race and regretted not registering... that looked like fun.

Congratulations to all for their wins and podium finishes! Alex, better luck next time!

Agree with everyone, it was a fun race. Nothing too challenging and a great one to learn how to position yourself within a peloton.

Congrats to all the podium finishers!

Very late to reply to this, but indeed, this was a fun and very well run race.  I had no idea what to expect - my only experience with crits being at the Turbo Tuesday rides, and also given that the women's field included all categories (E1/2 combined with the usual E3, Junior and Masters).  There ended up being a 8-people break away (all E1/2 and one E3 I think), and the rest of us were in the main bunch. The weather was quite pretentious - ominous clouds at times and some quick showers to mix things up a bit...

Watching Paul and the E1 race was exciting - very dynamic and looked super challenging, especially with Ryan Roth there.  I managed to get a sort of a decent shot of Paul "Head Down and Hammer".

Huge thanks to Phallon and Gord for coming out to support us and cheer!!

Hey guys,

Just want to thank everyone who was up representing the BCC racing.  It is so great to see you all support each other not only in the rides but at the races.  It is awesome reward for all the hard work you all have put in last season and through the winter.

Thank you for representing the club and being such great ambassadors of the sport!

Hats off you you all!

Dan.

Thanks for the write up Paul as well as for volunteering.

Here is a pick of my Connor leading the eventual squirt boys race winner (also named Connor).

That's a great shot, Mike! Was cool to watch the Connor duo work really well together to get a strong lead.
