Forest City Velodrome in London is a plywood oval track with high banked turns. The track is built in an old hockey arena where the London Knights played when I was a little kid. Bikes are included in the course cost. ($30 for 3 hrs)
Wow, that was fun! If you don't believe me, look at the smiles on everyone.
It was a great way to spend a Saturday. Being a first timer, I was in the learn to ride group. Dave the instructor, took us through some drills, riding the fixies in the infield to get balanced and learn to unclip, stop, pickup water bottles and set down, then onto the blue zone at the bottom edge of the track for a few laps.
Next we were able to move up onto the track and ride the black line and do some more exercises to make us comfortable. Eventually the speed increased and we were doing laps between the red and blue lines, almost like pros!
Rob, one of the founders was on the side of the track calling out instructions while Dave, or another instructor Ives? were pulling the line of us around. Shifting hands from up on the bars down to the drops, and alternating, standing drills, and lots of laps! 3 standing laps in a row makes the quads do some work!
The second timers got to do some higher speed stuff, higher up the track, next time for me!
Instructors were great, Rob the coach did a great job converting us from roadies to the trackies.
Thanks to Jon Spira for arranging the day, I'll go back!
