Cyclocross is back - The Dirt Squirrel - CX number 1

Hooray CX season is here!

What a fantastic day for the first CX race of the season.  BCC was well represented, special congratulations to Conor McInnis (Mike's son) for racing in the U13 race.

Marko Li, Paul McKeever, Bruce Day, Jeff Norman, Mike McInnis, Jeff McCachren, CS boys Mike Nyby and Jake Williams plus a few old friends.

This course is about 3 km and nearly flat with a bunch of twisty turns, a few high speed straights, a little sand, a couple hops and 2 barriers.  Low danger, high fun, tons of work!

Very spectator friendly, many parts of the course can be seen from one spot.

E4/M3 race was first up.  The start is a flat grass section about 3m wide and straight for 100m.  Stuff 78 people into the space and it was tight.   I started near the middle of the bunch (I wasn't early enough to the start to get a better spot).  321 go!  Front guys sprint, later riders jostle to find a clear line, speed ramps up, then slows a lot at the first corner, single file thru a bunch of twisty stuff, track is slick so pay attention!,  speed ramps up when it opens up, then more turns, loose gravel section to fast pavement, back into some switchbacky turns, grass straight, sweeper then barriers to jump, a couple nice banked turns around a tree wells, down to the beach for some a sand crossing, up a little rise with a few low barriers to bunny hop, turn, straight, turn, onto the start finish straight .

5 laps ...  45minutes, going as fast as you can.  No pelaton to rest in, no coasting, just GO!  It is a blast.

Hope everyone else had as much fun as I did.

If you have any interest, we ride in the school fields at Birchmount and Kingston road on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm till 8.  Bring your CX bike, hybrid, or mountain bike for a great workout.

As Steve Jones said, it's way more fun than Brimley's.

Great writeup. It was a good race - very scenic and the weather couldn't have been any better.

If you are a contender, you really need to be lined up near the front of the line or you will be out of contention.
