First Saturday Ride of the Season: Completed!

Hey all,

Here are the pics:

Hope you all had a good ride today. Warm welcome to all the new riders.  Hope you had a great first experience with the BCC.

Received an e-mail from a neighbour:

Hi

It's great to see your group out on the roads again enjoying the warm weather.  I'd like to ask a favour of your group please - when you are out on roads such as Guildwood Parkway, Coronation, and Manse, please ask your memebrs to ride single file, or at the most two abreast.  When the group takes up the whole lane of traffic it makes it very difficult for the cars behind you which have to drive into oncoming traffic to get around the cyclists.

On your site your group states "Do not hold up following traffic: Ride single file on single-lane and busy roads where motor vehicles are frequently coming past" - Please remind your members of this.

Thanks!  And happy riding!

Let's try and be mindful of the single lane roads and cars as we enjoy or ride.  Please and Thank-you:-)

Here was my response:

Hey,

Thanks for the e-mail.   I will address this on the site.  It's sometimes hard to keep an eye on everyone, as the group is over 300 in size.  Thanks for being my eyes:-)

Safety is my #1 Concern.   It is addressed here: http://beachescyclingclub.ning.com/profiles/blogs/first-saturday-ri...

Please let me know if there are any concerns in the future.

Cheers,

Daniel.

Dan, last year when a ride was posted I got a "prompt" in my email with a link to the notice on the BCC website. Has that changed? I did not get anything on the Saturday ride and only saw the Sunday ride because I want to the website to see what was happening. Either way will work for me but let me know if the routine is different from last year. Thanks.

Hey Dan, that's a really nice letter the person wrote. I have a couple comments to add regarding today's ride. It was good to see such a large group out so soon in the season. I do hope the fellow that took a spill will come back out soon, he seemed to just brush off a pretty nasty fall. And speaking of safety: It is important to try to maintain a tight double or a single paceline on single lane roads like Guildwood, as well as roads where the traffic is more dense... I felt that our group was showing a bit of the early season all-over-the-place behaviour we all tend to get rusty on over the winter. Riders should always be looking far ahead for danger as well as to anticipate the group's movement(s). When the light goes green, riders should try to slowly bring the pace back up so as not to exaggerate the slingshot effect further back in the pack. As well, and I feel I can't mention this enough: HOLD YOUR LINE!! There were several scary moments today that could have been avoided by simply following a steady course and cycling in a predictable manner. Safe riding all and see you out there!

First Saturday ride was great. It was nice to meet all the new people, and I hope you'll all come back - it was a great ride. You were all marvelous - I know that we tired out a couple of you, but you all finished with smiles on your faces - good to see!

I'd like to thank the neighbour mentioned above for writing such a courteous reminder about sharing the road. This too is often on my mind as we ride along the single-lane stretches of road. I try to think of myself in the drivers' seat of a car - it's often easy to think of car drivers as "jerks" because of the small handfull of bad apples who try to scare us. But 99% of the drivers out there are very considerate, and go to great lengths to avoid us - often doing somewhat risky manouvers like driving on the wrong side of the street to give us a comfortable berth. In order to properly "share the road" with drivers, we need to take the safe space that we need, but not more. It can be very scary for a driver to try to safely manouver past a large group like ours. Let's make a point of remembering this in the future - the neighbour's kind letter is a good reminder for the beginning of the season.

I think that Pat's suggestion about breaking up the group starts - if even for a few minutes - is a good idea. On Saturday the 2 groups left at different times, and it no doubt led to less of a train of riders on Gerrard.

Glad everyone had a good ride (hope the rider who fell in the Zoo Group is okay!) and hope to see you all soon! Happy Spring - Finally!!!

Oh, I forgot... thanks to Sven for hanging out with me while I changed out my flat near the end of the Zoo Loop! I gotta watch that pothole underneath the bridge on Danforth!
