Hey all,

Unfortunately, Alex had a little crash and broke his clavicle at Terra Cotta on Monday.  From what I was told, he was taken out by another rider not holding their line in the corner.  We wish him a speedy recovery!

That's awful news.

Alex, I hope you heal up quickly and get yourself back out on the road soon.

Thanks Dan!  I was taken out hard on turn two of the race. But to be fair, there were no marshalls indicating the turn, and the police officer at the intersection had his back to the race.

It appeared like it was a straight through controlled intersection.  I was second wheel, and the lead rider hit the intersection real fast (going straight).  With no indication from marshalls as to if we were to be turning, or going straight through the intersection, I followed suit.

In a last second, frantic, horrible decision by the lead rider, he jammed the brakes and pulled hard right, directly into me.  We got tangled up and I full out bodychecked the pavement.

I'll find out soon if surgery's needed, but in and case the collar bone is badly broken and I've got some heavy road rash.

(Note UCI rule 15.2.001 The course must be clearly marked using arrows and signs, and by marshals)

As sketchy as the riders decision was, the fault lies with race organizers for providing no signage, arrows or marshals to indicate the full 90 degree turn.

Guess I'll be back on the trainer for awhile!

Sounds horrible, and unusual to have that happen at the front. Were there a lot of other casualties Alex, or were you the only unlucky one?

Comment by Alex Mulholland on August 4, 2015 at 6:15pm

I was actually pulling/riding second wheel to avoid first lap sketchyness!  frig.. only two of us went down that crash.  there was a handful of other crashes, but they seemed mostly like the usual road rash based on the other customers at the first aid tent.

That's unfortunate to hear and some poor marshalling.

You've been doing more recovering than riding lately. Hope you have a quick recovery and can get back out there soon. Centurion still a possibility?

More importantly though, how's the bike?

That's horrible! I hope the healing goes both well and quickly.

As I read your comments, I did notice some confusion with no volunteers to flag the upcoming turns.

In case you're not aware, there's a video of your race:

Again, get well soon. You're young and have many many years of cycling ahead of you.

This was truly sad to hear about. Hope all is going well so far on the healing front so far. You're one tough dude, so there's no doubt you'll make a rapid recovery!

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hey Alex- terrible news.  I see you're doing trainer rides already which will hopefully aid in a speedy recovery.  All the best- hope to see you on the road soon.  DaveO.
