It was nice to show up for a race and be one of five BCCers on the start line. I knew that Jessica would be there but it was a pleasant surprise to see Nick, Terri, and Joyce competing as well.
The venue for this year’s Provincial Championships was Cobourg which is distinguished by its brutally hilly bike course. Well, everyone thought it was hilly except for Jessica (Hills? What hills?).
My race started with a chaotic swim sprint which eventually turned into a relaxing (maybe too relaxing) cruise in a group of swimmers in choppy Lake Ontario. I got out of the water in 24th spot overall and started to make up ground on the bike. By the turnaround point at 20km I was in fifth place and by the end of the ride I got into transition in third. The run did not go as well as the bike. I initially passed the second place guy but my stride just wasn’t feeling comfortable and three guys passed me before the end of the 10km run. So I was fifth overall but as luck would have it none of the top four were in my age group which means that I’m the Ontario champion for men 35-39. Awesome! I’ve never won an age group Ontario championship before. The only negative part of the race for me was the swim. The slowest of the top four guys in front of me was a whopping 2 minutes 20 seconds faster than I was out of the water. Any competitive swimmers out there who could give a guy a lesson or two?
Joyce also had a great race and won her age group with an impressive and balanced attack. Way to go on your provincial championship Joyce!
Jessica had an extremely impressive race placing sixth overall among all women. She won silver in her age group against perhaps the stiffest competition any of us faced. The overall women’s winner was in Jessica’s age group and used to be the Canadian cross country champion. She regularly beats professional women on the circuit so a second to this athlete is as impressive a result as winning any other age group. Way to go Jessica!
Terri and Nick also had great races. Terri crushed the difficult bike course with a very impressive ride. I guess we’ll be seeing her at the Tuesday Night Ride soon.
Well, if this year’s Ontario Championship showed anything it’s that the BCC has some serious triathlon chops. That with several prominent club triathletes not even in attendance (Jodie, qb, James, Brooke, Kerri, Chelsea, Kara, Matthew, Henna and Charles come to mind although I’m sure I’ve missed some). We should definitely set up some group training and try to rope more people into the sport
Finally and most importantly, I have to thank Brooke for dragging herself out of bed at 3:40am this morning for a race she wasn’t even participating in and cheering and taking pictures. Awesome!
