Jason Shuker - Race Across America (RAAM) 2018

Fellow BCC’rs;

In September of 2016, my support team (Bruce Day & Steve Jones) and I completed the Ohio RAAM Challenge, and subsequently qualified for the Race Across America (RAAM) annual event.  It was an amazing experience and one I will not soon forget.  However, with that challenge behind us, it was time to think about what’s next.  After careful consideration, the team decided it would best to hold off on the RAAM 2017 event.  Hence, we deferred our intent to participate, in the Solo Category, until the June 2018 campaign.

For 35 years RAAM has been challenging ultra-cyclists from around the globe to push their physical and mental limits to the farthest reaches. Starting in Oceanside, under one of the longest piers in California, RAAM spans 3000 miles, climbs 175,000 feet, crosses 12 states and finishes in Annapolis, Maryland, the east coast sailing mecca. Open to amateur and professional racers, in solo, 2-, 4- and 8-person relay teams, there is no other race in the world comparable to RAAM. The Race has become a global icon, having had over 35 countries represented. Not only has RAAM proved to be one of the most challenging races in the world, but has become a huge platform for racers to raise awareness and money for charities of their choice.  Racers have raised over $2 million per year over the past 5 years.

Now, I know what you are thinking - RAAM 2018 is not for another year and half.  I know, can you believe it, we only have another year and half to get this all planned and ready!  With the New Year upon us, it’s time to get rolling.

At this particular time, I am asking for your assistance in getting things underway.  I am looking for anyone with knowledge, experience, contacts and/or skills to initiate and help move the following areas along:

  • Financial (Accounting, Budgets, etc…)
  • Funding (Fundraising, GoFundMe, Sponsorship, etc..)
  • Charitable ties (Crohn’s & Colitis, Pancreatic Cancer Foundation)
  • Social Media (FB, IG, etc…)
  • Travel and Lodging support (Cars, RV’s, Hotels, etc…)
  • Preliminary Rider Support (Bike Parts,  Route Review & Strategy, etc…)
  • On course Rider Support (Bike Maintenance, Route Planning,
  • Nutrition (Crew, Rider, etc…)
  • Training (tips, tricks, information, etc…)

I would like to assemble a small team that can provide support and work with me to prepare and execute an extremely successful campaign.  If you are interested in joining the small team or if you can impart some knowledge or advice, please drop me an email (Jason.shuker@gmail.com).

Once again, thank you to all BCC’rs for support me over the past few years and into the future as I continue to build and strengthen for RAAM 2018.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Jason, congrats on putting this crazy, lunatic race into your schedule. For those who haven't heard of this race, check out inspired to ride. Jason, I would suggest you talk to mindset cycling Peter Oyler (2x RAAM finisher) about the road to Oceanside.

Jason, I will also send you some of the fundraising structure that we used for Peter's 2013 RAAM effort

Thanks QB for your suggestion.  Will be reaching out to Peter ASAP.  Also, greatly appreciate the fundraising structure information.   Will be a huge help.

Thanks Again!
