This was a fun event to watch. My first time watching triathalon and the first time for my son Stephen to attempt the event. I had no idea what to expect, and was very impressed. Friendly people who seemed casual but filled with purpose and serious about doing their best.
The group was split up into waves, each wave had a start time. The wave was marshalled from the beach into thigh deep water ready for the start. Count down and they are off. The swim was a 750m counter clockwise triangle, and ended at the beach, just steps behind the start area. Run from the beach to the transition area while loosening and removing the wetsuit, get to the transition area, put on the bike stuff, walk the bike to the mounting area and ride for 30km. The ride course is flat and goes east along the lakeside path, loops and back and forth a few times. The challenge is that the path is not closed, so the general public is mixed in with the riders and blockages occur occasionaly. After the ride you get back to the transition to and begin the 7.5km run. The run is a mix of grass and paved path.
Stephen did great, 30th place overall for the swim portion, and a little back of mid pack of about 350 for the ride and the run. Overall he had a great day will do more of these. I might even get inspired to try a tri!

Sounds like Stephen had a great first time out! I have to agee on the friendly vibe that is present at triathlons. I know that that was part of what convinced me to do Guelph again in September. Glad that he enjoyed it and that it was a positive experience for him!

Congrats to your son Jeff, this whole triathlon thing gets addictive. Its great fun, changes it up with three sports and the people are competitive but still very supportive (where else in a world championship race would another pro help a competitor who would then win the race as a result - check the 2008 women's race at kona).
