More Marvellous Midnight MTB Mayhem (and alliteration)

A relatively large crowd tonight: Thanks to Brownen, Reg, Lisa, Jeff, Demetre, Gord, Thi, Dru, and Darryl for joining me on tonight's ride.

We had lots of fun with a quick Taylor Creek loop, then tackling the flats on the east side of the train tracks, climbing up to Loblaws and returning to the east side of the tracks via the southern portion of Crothers Wood. Then with the setting sun forcing some riders back home, Reg, Lisa, Gord, Demetre and I did some night time riding back through Crothers Wood.

As always, a ton of fun and a couple of videos. If you're wondering why my videos always sound like the were taken by Darth Vader while he was having an asthma attack, it's because the microphone on my camera is mounted on the back (towards the picture/video taker). Because I don't have a mount, I'm taking photos and videos holding the camera up to my face to try an at least point it vaguely in the right direction, and I wind up breathing directly into the microphone.

This is also why the camera work is always so shaky - I'm riding one-handed while doing all of this.

It adds up to some interesting video, however. If you watch closely, you can even see where I missed a turn (too busy looking at the camera!) and wound up bush-whacking for a brief period.

Hey! That was a great ride! It was dark as hell on my way back to Pottery Road! I think I saw you guys on the way back up towards Loblaws but who knows who is behind the lights in the forest! LOL Anyway, thanks! I'll be out next week too!

Darryl, great to see you out again, keep it up and you will be kicking butt with the single speed!
Peter, thanks again for the pics.
Anyone have names for the trails we are riding? Is there a website with trails and names?

Hey Jeff! I've seen a map of the trails somewhere, I'll try to dig it up... I laughed to myself yesterday night when I came up the trail towards Pottery Road in the dark... Faced with two trail signs in diverging directions, one says "This Way" the other "Not This Way"... I wondered wether those were instructions to riders or trail names? LOLOL I took the one marked "This Way"...

Hey Dru, that sign was put up when the two routes around the former "Pottery Road Hill" were improved, and each designated as one-way. I guess it's to avoid collisions since there are a lot of blind corners on that stretch, and parts of the east trail run right along the ridge (passing would be tricky; mess up and its a long way down...).

Surprisingly, most people seem to be abiding by the sign instructions. We're all sheep at heart.

LOL Good point Peter! The signs seemed funnier looming in the dark! I've seen the bottom of that part of the trail close-up. My wrist still throbs when the weather is about to turn!

You're amazing Peter! Riding in the Dark with a camera!

Looks like I missed a fun one! Thi, you're so sweet - thanks for missing me! XO

Peter, amazing camera work as usual - still can't believe you can do it - I have enough trouble riding with both hands on the bars. It's still really Blair Witch, but this time I took Gravol before watching the videos, so I didn't get motion sickness. Nice.

Jeff, here's the latest:

Andrew,
Thanks! Always great to have some positive feedback.

We've been fortunate in that the City has really stepped up and invested in some of these trails. New maps are in the works, as well as naming trails.

We do hold semi-regular build days, etc, if you're interested in becoming more involved. Keep an eye on our website (next one is October 23), and email us if you're interested in being a part.

See you on the trails!

Cheers,
Alastair

Hey there!

I was out riding the Don Trails with some friends for the first time this summer. You people have been doing awesome work on the trails and I just wanted to pass on my thanks and show some appreciation for your efforts.

I noticed you've gone to a lot of trouble to erect signs and directions. Is there a map of the trails? It seems some of the trails have names and others don't. I'd love to go explore everything and one could argue that getting lost is the point of the adventure but still...

Cheers,
Andrew Wanie

It might be cool to join in some of the trail work as a club... or at least as trail users...
Comment by Jeff N on September 16, 2010 at 1:37pm
Community spirit! I would be happy to help out and get to know some of the people doing the work, they deserve a hand and thanks for the great work. What is the website that Alastair refers to?
