One hundred and thirty four Master B (40 - 49 year old) racers lined up on Sunday afternoon to vie for the 2011 National Master road race championship on an incredibly hot and sunny Burlington course.
BCC was represented by three riders - myself, Peter Skalenda, and Steve Fantaske. The race would prove to be incredibly gruelling, at a distance of 113 km with over 1100 m of climbing. Add in temperatures well over 30 degrees (with a humidex pushing close to 40) and a course that while generally well sheltered from the wind had shade in extremely short supply. (One of most appreciated spectactors was a local resident who had a hose spraying one side of the road - although it didn't represent the most efficient route, many racers made certain to ensure that their line took them under the spray.)
Only 39 racers would actually finish the race. Sadly, neither Peter Skalenda nor myself would be in this group (Peter would struggle on for over 80 km before finally yielding to the heat; I got off relatively easily after flatting at the beginning of the second lap and losing so much time that I was neutralized after only 20 km). However, our own Steve Fantaske held in tough and crossed the finish in 22nd place!!!
