Mission accomplished, I can say now that I am an Ironman!
The marathon at the end wasn't very pretty but the other parts went well.
No need to describe the difficulties of the race, QB did an excellent job last year and you can always read his blog.
The day started well with a calm and warm sea. The 3.8 km leg of the swim was slow but this was expected. My goal was to finish in about 1:30 and be fresh at the end. It's exactly what happened (1:28).
Up I went with the 180 km bike ride. I wanted to somewhat take it easy to keep some strength for the run but of course I didn't do that.
My time was 6:05 (almost 30/hour average with over 2000 m climb in scorching heat (32 Celsius and not a lot of shade). I passed over 900 participants in the process.
When I started the 42 km run (4 loops) my legs where amazingly good but the heat started to get the best of me. The two first loops went fine but after that, my stomach refused to ingest any food or drink and I felt like vomiting at every step and also felt dizzy. So I walked the entire 3rd loop and felt at my worst. I regained a bit of strength for the final loop and finished with a sprint but the damage was done (5:55).
With two 10 mn transition the total time was 13h 49mn (over 1 hour more that I had anticipated) but other than some blisters under my feet I felt quite good at the end.
For the record, the winner, a Belgian named Frederik Van Lierde finished in 8:21:51 (new race record) with a 39 km/h average in the bike segment!!!
Now I can enjoy one more week of real vacation including wine at meals and look forward to riding with you guys again.
I hope that the few of you who participated in the Welland half ironman did well Sunday.
