One week to go till rubber hits the road

Well following about 6 months of training the tour of California is looming large in my week ahead. Within the week i will be in the saddle trying to grind through the most epic physical experience i have faced. I keep reflecting on whether i have created enough resources to deal with the incessant climbing day after day. I can only hope that a watt is a watt is a watt and that whether i am climbing or riding a flat my increased watt output will carry me to the finish line.

This past week i had the pleasure of riding in las vegas at red rock canyon. Picturesque, which makes the grind up about 2200  feet of vertical more pleasant. As i road into strong headwinds uphill with the very comforting knowledge that i got to ride downhill with tailwinds on my ride back to the vegas strip it hit me smack in the face. ATOC is a point to point race, which has the very obvious possibility of always facing headwinds. OMG, this is not a comforting thought. Of course the optimists might suggest that i could have perpetual tailwinds - fat chance.

In any event, i am looking forward to the whole experience. I will blog daily and hopefully add some pictures; my garmin files (which you will be able to see on strava if you want to follow the race there) and video. i appreciate any and all of the commentary on my blogging and hope to gather a few stories from the pro peloton.

Given i will miss the niagara classic road race, good luck to all of our clubmates who saddle up for that great race. I will be feeling your effingham pain in spades!!

Cheers

Qb

Hey QB, looking forward to some great reports! May the wind always be at your tail!

Good luck, QB! Hope you have an awesome time and kick some Mt. Baldy butt. I'm not even gonna hide it - I'm very jealous! I'm also looking forward to your reports.

Kick ass and take names QB!  Can't wait to read your blogs about the experience!  I second Dru's wish for the rarely experienced double tail wind effect!

Hey QB. I'm very excited to follow your progress in this epic race. I have no doubt that all of your diligent rigorous training will pay off. Your body will not let you down. I have an idea that these sort of things are partly won in the mind - it will be fascinating to hear your thoughts on the inner battle that will be going on with you during the ride.  My wish for you is that you will wake up every morning feeling refreshed, calm, clear-headed and full of confidence that your past several years of training has left you strong and well-prepared to dig deep and give it everything you've got. I have no doubt that you will surprise even yourself, and that we will soon be hearing about your race with the rapt attention that is paid to a really really exciting adventure movie! Like Trish said, picture us all lined up along the sidelines screaming our lungs out for you... if you're labouring up a nasty climb with your legs trying to tell you that they're packin' it in and goin' for brunch, we'll be there yelling "GO QB!!!"

It's gonna hurt like heck, but I hope that you enjoy the hell out of it!!!

NOW GO GET 'EM!!!

Hey Q, I remember the first time you came out to ride with what was back then a small group at BCC. We were not riding so fast back then. But you were. I remember you pulling our little group across the Lakeshore for a "Danish" which was an epic 80klm ride for most of us newbies and that you were actually struggling on that ride. You were having a hard time keeping your heart rate elevated high enough for some basic base level fitness training (think you were doing an Iron Man). But you stayed with us and your were an awesome inspiration. You have become an even better athelte and your are now riding at perhaps what might be the highest level in your cycling yet and you have always remained an inspiration for us all. Jealous of what you have achieved before you have even started the event. Soak it in. Breathe deep and soak it in.

Hey QB,

I've known you for many years now and each year you always seem to have something that you've set out to do. I admire your perseverance, determination and drive. Kick some ass, suffer knowing there is an end, but most of all have fun. Not many can say they road the Tour de California!

Routing for you from T.O.!
