Post Ride Review: Ride for Heart 2013 - Mostly Wet with Chance of ... More Rain?

A bunch of us met at Tim Hortons at Lakeshore and Leslie @ 5AM this morning.  We rolled out, in the dark, and in the rain.  Took Lakeshore across to get to the startline.  NEW TERM: "Waterfall"! :-)  Got there and pretty much were at the front.  Peter S. was there, ready to race, and I am sure, he did it in under 2hrs.  After we got rolling, we managed to form into our regular BCC Riding Paceline.  I did a crash course on "How to ride in an Echelon".   After about 10-15kms into the ride, we managed to get into a rhythm.  Each pair spent 30 secs at the front #lookingpro.  If course, since this is the Ride for Heart, many other riders wanted to get in on this action... They got on the back and when the front riders dropped back, they weren't allowed in.  I'll get members in the lead group to elaborate... all in all a good day and relatively safe:-)  Andre....maybe you can elaborate:-)  Thanks to all the BCC'ers out today and the great Teamwork that went into keeping the train from getting derailed by other riders trying to catch a free ride.

Oh, and the BCC also got a Podium in the S4 Race at the KW Classic: Andrew Mouck.  Congrats! on #lookingpro  Full results here: http://www.ontariocycling.org/web_pages/results/20130602-184524-kwr...

Also, Garneau sponsored Team Europcar Podiums as well.

David Veilleux of Team Europcar placed 1st today at Stage 1 of the Critérium du Dauphiné as well as captured the mountains classification and points classification!!!

A great big thank you to Dan for having BCC participate in the Ride for Heart. I ride the event every year, but had never been even remotely close to the front. Once on the Gardiner there we were forming a double paceline and despite the rain we were rolling along taking 30 second pulls at 34 km/h! Dan kept telling us to switch every 30 seconds, but I could not even see my Garmin due to the rain and dark glasses! I came unhitched somewhere between Don Mills and Lawrence (the first big hill) but boy did it feel good while it lasted. I could see the train ahead of me, and the weird thing is when I looked behind me there was nobody (for a while) which was spooky.

At the top and the turnaround at York Mills it started coming down in buckets, and some of us took shelter under a mechanic's tent, then started back down to Bayview before heading back up to York Mills a second time. Thank you to Alexa and our new friend Paige we took turns pulling the rest of the way home. Coming back along the Gardiner we knew we were almost home, and the last stretch from Kingsway to the Ex was fun.

We were able to all meet up with the other members at the finish and heard about the crash, but seeing the way some non- BCC riders negotiated the route I am surprised that there was not more carnage. It made me appreciate the bike handling and safety techniques the club displays, and with our new kits we were both #lookingpro AND #feelingpro.

I finished the ride with an average speed of 28.7 km/h and over 20 minutes faster than any previous year. Just wait for 2014!

So Simon Kelley talked me into this event, made it possible by providing child care etc and, I've gotta be honest, the night before, having pestered people for donations, set my alarm for 4am and looked at the weather forecast, I was thinking, right, I'll do this once but can't see it happening again.  Woke to rain.  Met Simon at his house at 4:40 and he intelligently and thankfully suggested we forego the ride in and take his van.  Fast forward a few hours after what I have to describe as the most fun road ride of my life, we were back at the ex by 8:35 (despite taking 10-15 minutes to collect ourselves after the crash).  Average speed on my computer was 32.6 but, as usual, each time I looked down during the ride, it was somewhere in the mid 30's.  Many thanks to Dan for organizing and getting us sorted as soon as we began and to everyone in our group for pulling hard, keeping together and sharing all the fun.  Despite the whole getting up in the middle of the night thing, I expect to be back in 2014!

Thanks for the recaps - it looks like everyone had an awesome time despite the weather gods crashing down! This really is one of Toronto's best charity traditions. Anyway, I decided to skip out because I couldn't risk a crash on the day of my move. :( Next year it is!

Wow. That's the best Ride for Heart I've ever been involved in…reading, that is.

So sorry I missed it.

I've been missing these blogs.

Thanks Dan for your assistance and putting all these together :-)
