Sunday April 15th - way better than the weather predicted

7 of us started from grinder, picked up QB along the way and north we went.  Rob, Kevin, Tim and I turned at 19th and got to Starbucks in Unionville without rain, a little drizzle after coffee break, but it was warm so no trouble.  The others, Mark, Charles, Quentin, and Aaron left us and continued north along Leslie, hope your ride went well too!

With this cast of characters the pace was steady and quick.  All in all, another good day on the bike.

You lazy bums that enjoyed a nice sleep in and breakfast, I am a little jealous, but, am glad to get in the ride!

Great ride, a bit wet coming back but who cares! My shoes are now dry!

ps any recommendations on waterproof shoe covers?

Tim, the shoe covers are thin rubber without insulation from Louis Garneau, they were great for most of the ride back, but eventually the water creeped into the shoe, probably from around the cleat.  So not perfectly waterproof, but kept the wind off the feet, so feet were warm and kept the grime off the shoes.  I think I got them from CycleSolutions last spring.

Too bad I missed you guys.  I was late leaving home, so I booked it up to Don Mills/Eg hoping to meet the group at the turn.  I got there at 8:10 and waited about 15 minutes, at which point I just rode north on my own.

I have a pair of those Garneau shoe covers.  They claim to be waterproof, and do a good job ... up to a point, like Jeff says. My feet were wet in the end, but it would have happened a lot sooner and been worse without the covers.  Velotique has quite a large selection.

Another post-rain ride trick to dry out wet shoes...newspaper.  Lots of newspaper wadded in your shoes will eventually dry them out - I didn't believe it until I tried it.  Now keep a small hoarde just for those occasions when I'm NOT being a lazy bum, sleeping in and enjoying a yummy breakfast ;)  I have yet to find anything that will really keep the rain out on a ride so focus on just getting the shoes dry again as quickly as possible after the ride so I won't have to store them outside due to smell.  Glad that you guys had a safe ride!

Hey Tim, much to offer on the shoe cover issue. Once the water does get in, it does not come out! And it will get in. Think most of the water gets in as it runs down your leg and eventually soaks your sock.Once the sock starts to get wet it acts like a sponge drawing more water down into the shoe. Your feet will remain really wet until you take them off as they trap in the water. On a long ride after the rain lets up your shoes will still be full of water as no air gets in to help dry them. They are great to prevent road spray from getting in on a short ride, and they do keep the grime off your shoes and they do help keep your feet warm. But they also help keep them nice and squishy!

Thanks for the ride charles, aaron and mark.  I have come to the conclusion that good company on a long ride truly does make almost any conditions quite bearable. without my powertap i dont have much in the way of data but i think we were able to maintain a brisk pace.

On the subject of wet feet, i think booties help (29.00 at mec) but as jeff suggested the water just rolls down the leg and into your shoe. Probably the best solution is for all of us to ride with fenders when there is threat of rain. I contend most of the water comes from the wheel you are trying to follow - that rider is filling your shoes with water.
