Sunday Ride: Goodwood/Stouffville

Hope you all had a good ride with the respective groups.  Thanks Trish, Brooke, Joseph, Laura, Sheddy, Leigh for hanging out with me.   Sorry about your flat Jones, I know you just wanted to see if you could catch up:-)

Thanks for the brisk pace back Jake, Howard, Steve.

Good ride.  Comments welcome.

Well, well, well ....  The drizzly weather yesterday "allowed" me to somewhat accomplish my 2012 Season Riding Goal which was "Ride with the Sunday group - and keep up".  I say somewhat, for without the help of my BCC friends pulling me along, I would likely still  be at the coffee shop in Stouffville.

Thank you:

  • Joseph, for your early pulls and encouragement
  • Dan, for literally pushing me up some hills (my banana - not so happy)
  • Lovely man with cold fingers (not that I experienced them!) for pulling me into Stouffville
  • My fellow Americans for pulling me out of Stouffville
  • The Group of Seven (Trish, Brooke, Laura, Joseph, another lovely man, me and my bike) for pulling me to Kingston Road

Hell, thank you to everyone!  I am fed, showered, napped, latte'd (thanks to my daughter) and ready to "think" about next week!

Until then ....

First the bad stuff, I found out at the break that the we in the fast group dropped one due to a mechanical.  Sorry Ian.   Glad you were able to quickly get some air into the tire and chase.

I think it is a courtesy that if someone at the back calls slow up, that the message gets passed to the front and the group slows or stops to find out what the problem is.  Paying it forward is always the right thing to do.

And what was with the half the group just taking off after coffee?  Not not very BCC.

Now the good stuff,

Uphill and into a strong wind all the way to Goodwood and trying to hang onto the fast group, what was I thinking? I new that it was only a matter of time before falling off the back.  Happy to hang on until south of Stouffville when the legs said noooo!.  Thanks for the pulls by Aaron, Malcolm and Stephan it was nice to share the ride with you.  I'll need a few more of these rides to kick my butt back into shape.

Hey Jeff, I didn't hear about the mechanical until past Stouffville and no-one in the group could identify anyone missing, I think everyone assumed the group got smaller because of the turn-off to Stouffville...

As for taking off, I was starting to stiffen-up, so was Stephen, I think and I just wanted to roll out slowly. I didn't know the few who rolled out with me had in mind to get home early until we got back down to Wagg (or is that Webb?).

On the way up, you and I communitcated a bit just before you backed-off the pace, I was feeling particularly good and knew you were safe with a few guys behind you so, dare I say, I wasn't too worried, I figured we'd see you at the coffee shop.

Still, I guess I/we still have work to do in communicating with/within the group.

Sunday was interesting, met up with Paul and did some brimley road repeats - 8 in total, all slower than the one before. I was still feeling the impact of the day prior, which is a key lesson learned. Don't starve the body of nutritution or the price to be paid will continue if more work is being demanded. At 8am, we were ready to roll with the main group as they came up St.Clair. With the wind coming from the NE, this was going to be a tough ride and as I made a pull at the front, I had already decided to capitulate and short turn this ride. My decision was certainly made more certain as we started hauling north on Altona and Peter Cahill took a strong turn on the front that left me burning- desperately clawing for his wheel to no avail and so I short-turned my way home.

A couple of thoughts particularly for those who ask the speed at which the first group rolled. Speed is relevant buy only marginally so. With the type of head/cross winds of Sunday, speed is very deceptive relative to the work effort. Secondly, constant speed is always easier than averages. Remember that averages are deceiving - highest average goal scoring brothers in the NHL - sutters, sedins - no it is the Gretzkys (would you pick Keith or Wayne in a hockey pool?)! The point is that an average speed of 32, will really mean that there is a lot of peak work happening at 38-40km/h and then relative resting at 25-27km/h. This will be materially tougher on the rider - in my opinion.

My two cents
