Today's ride was fantastic! The scenery was gorgeous - that path out to Pickering is lovely; although I would imagine that on a warm sunny day, it would be lousy with dogs and walkers. Nice pace too - not a blistering speed, but true to the spirit of "Social Saturdays" - got to talk to people I hadn't met before. Also, the windy (as in curvy, not air speed) trail peppered with gravel, sand and bridges was good practice for some rusty bike handling skills - good communication by all on the various upcoming hazzards led to a safe ride. Very enjoyable indeed! Thanks all.

Note to self - don't wear yellow during gnat season - please look closely at the photo of Gnat King Rob in the yellow jacket...

The Zoo Loop went well. Unfortunately, Thi's new bike is as quick up hill as his last one! LOL

The clouds of insects are called midges. They swarm at several times of the year and mate in mid-air. They are non-biting but highly annoying. They feed on organic stuff like other dead bugs, leaves, etc. They're actually helpful for water filtration because they eat the crap floating on the water. They reproduce at least 4 times a year and when they're flying around in the air mating, they actually store sperm from several different mates, thus mixing up the gene pool quite effectively.

Well, there y'are - more than you ever needed to know about all the bugs we ate on today's ride.

Did the Pickering "Search for Blinky" ride. Great route! If only all roads were as baby's bottom smooth as Bayly! On the way back I bailed on my own to head up Rougemount to Altona and then the Zoo Loop. A word of caution: Altona is an unrideable mess all the way to Sheppard now. After asking a local how to get 'round it all I found myself on the part of Sheppard that is called Twyn Rivers. I figured what the hell and made a left. That climb is friggin' steeper than I recall! Made it to the top and continued on my way. I nice ride that warranted not one but two Grinder coffees. Also, found out the new Grinder opens on Tuesday. The swarms of midges were not as irritating as pickup driver plate #260IVP, but I gotta say embro does a great job on them, as I managed to catch about a dozen of pesky buggers along the way!
