THANK YOU ALL! That helped Volunteer at the Scotiabank Marathon.

Thanks to all the members and friends of the BCC for volunteering their Sunday Ride day to help marshal the race!

It was a great success, and I'm sure some volunteers will have stories to share:)

Thanks again!

Special Mention to Kevin Dahany for doing the marathon distance, just so he could see his fellow BBC'ers! Dave, nice to see you were feeling strong!

Cheers,

Dan.

Well, I have to say, besides getting yelled at for about 2 hours by irate drivers who were trapped south of Queen on Lee, it was a really fun day! It was very inspiring to see all the people who must have trained all year to run such a long race. It was interesting to watch the different running styles, see the expressions on the runners' faces, and watch the progress.

The highlight of the day was seeing Kevin run by - he looked so fresh! It was as if he had just run out his front door and decided to go for a little run... as always, he was smiling! Fabulous job Kevin - I can't believe you switched to the full marathon just to see everybody! We're sure glad you did! I missed Dave Birch though - that was at the height of when Officer Shaun and I were getting yelled at by the mob... Shaun kept his cool the entire time and remained steadfast and professional, despite the various lunatics:

1st prize goes to the fat cold-sore-ridden guy and his pinchy-faced wife in the burgundy minivan who were screaming and swearing at us for 1 1/2 hours because THEY WERE GOING TO BE LATE FOR CHURCH!!! I stopped short of telling him that god was going to "smite" him for his bad behavior and that he was probably going to go to hell for being an a$#hole, not for missing church.

Second prize goes to the horrible white haired screeching granny whose grandaughter was apparently missing the pleasure of her (also swearing) company.

Third prize goes to old Buick Geezer, who harassed us for the whole 2 hours, only to go through the intersection and come back 20 minutes later to wait in line to yell at us some more. Perhaps he should find himself some volunteer work so that he can use his powers for good, not evil...

A special prize goes to the woman who dragged her daughter over to Officer Shaun and said "Now you have to explain to my daughter why she has to miss her friends' birthday party! Go on,... TELL HER!!!" The girl looked more upset about the fact that her mother was a raving maniac than she was about missing the party...

Aside from the nutbars, the rest of the people in the beach were lovely and accommodating and friendly and seemed happy to have such a great event in their 'hood. It was fun to talk to folks from the neighbourhood, hang with BCC'ers and cheer for the runners. The police officers were great, and thanks to Dan for getting us all to volunteer. A marvelous day!

It was quite strange and a treat to sleep in a bit longer than a typical Sunday morning and then ride my 1-spd cruiser for 10k rather than the usual bike and distance. To ride along Queen into the Beaches on a road with nary a car in sight was surreal and a bit of fun!

We had a fantastic if sometimes trying time at Queen and Lee. Before the fast runners started to fly by at the 32k point, and then again in the other direction at 34k, Rob told us to notice just how quietly they would do so. And he was right! They were dancing out there!

Then, as Alexx described, it got louder. A few competitors became dozens and hundreds and thousands more, and the queue of honking backed up cars and their irate drivers ramped up. It was quite irritating but secretly I loved it! My favourite idiot was the woman who came up to tell us that Lee was an access road and that we should have the racers 'just jog on the spot for a few minutes till everyone gets through'. Me first me first! Of course, they wouldn't have been able to get through, as there were morons stopped southbound in the northbound lanes and leaving their cars to yell at us and the cops. So we decided to yell back. Not the cops though, as they remained quite professional. And eventually I went up the street to tell them not to bother going down there, unless they were looking for a bit of inspiration, and to perhaps parking and try walking a block or two for once in their sedentary, fat-arsed lives! I could actually hear the honking about 500 metres away. I was amazed that some people asked me 'what was going on down there' while others stuck in traffic vowed this would be the last Toronto Waterfront Marathon because of how poorly 'we' had organized it. Utter deer-in-the-headlights ignorance from some people, and sour grapes from others who should only be kicking themselves for not planning around this few hour and once-a-year 'inconvenience'.

Sadly, this all made me miss a lot of competitors, including Kevin. Congrats on making that last minute decision to do the full! And David, you must have done a pretty good time, because you ran by quite early on!

All in all, a proper Sunday ride missed, but a great event to be part of.
