Well there is about 7 months left before I line up on the starting line at IM Canada in penticton. This is a race that everyone wants to compete in or so it seems. I got very lucky signing up on-line. The good news is that I will have three buddies joining me for the race - Steve B a money manager here in Toronto, Stew M - an equity salesman in the UK, and Christian L - an investment banker in vietnam - an eclectic group.
today I rode for 2.5 hours at wattsup - we did the Silverman course in Nevada, what a challenging hilly ride. It never really allows you to get into a groove - ascending and descending all of the time.
I completed 69kms in 2.5 hours, average watts of 239 - avg heart rate 146, max hr of 172 - about 2000 calories burned. Much of the ride is in zone 1 & 2 heart rate as I build the base for ironman distance. It was my last ride with my oldest son as he heads off for 6 weeks on a school exchange. It has been great getting him riding indoors on a trainer for 3 hours and seeing him actually enjoy it.
Following the ride, I played shinny outdoors (something we do every sunday with my son's hockey team). It is neat to wear the garmin outdoors on a rink. Over the 56 minutes, i skated 7.8kms, max speed of 18 km/hr (less than the world record holder for the marathon!!!), average hr of 132, max at 160.
Thank goodness for the sunshine, makes the cold a little more bearable.
On feb 1, i begin my formal IM training with my coach. Eating healthy, training lots and trying to get a good night sleep. A massage once a week is a must. Ultimately "everything in moderation".
