Last Sunday marked quite a milestone for me....yes believe it or not, it was our one year anniversary! It was a year ago Sunday that I first set out on my hybrid to meet the group at Tim Horton's on Birchmount for what turned out to be the first of many rides with the BCC.
I still remember rolling up to the intersection of Vic Park and Gerrard, where I met Arn. He said that I looked like I was setting out for a long ride and when I told him where I was going, he smiled and said that he was going in the same direction and invited me to ride along. The relief I felt at knowing that I wouldn't be showing up alone was huge!
I think that Dan was almost as surprised as I was when he saw that I had actually showed up. I was fresh from the RTCC '08, and seeing as I'd done the 200km total the previous weekend, felt pretty confident in my abilities to ride with the group. I had planned on going the shorter 80km route, this being my first time out and all, and as I fell to the back of the pack, I was happy that I'd made that decision. Discovering that I'd missed the turn around point, Dan said "it's fine, you can do the full 120!" I still appreciate the unwavering faith in my abilities that you have, Dan!
So I trudged along, helped A LOT along the way by several other riders as my painful progress was slow but steady.
Couldn't have been happier to reach our break point in Stouffville where I happily grabbed a cuppa and enjoyed time off the bike. Then we had to head home.
Figuring that it wouldn't be cool to call a cab, I hopped back on my bike and started off home. I was extremely fortunate to have James and Dan as my chaperones/babysitters on the long way home, and still feel awful about the fact that we were caught in quite a rain storm. Couldn't help but think that if they'd been able to ride up ahead with the rest of the pack, they would have been home, and dry. Instead they rode along with me, offering advice, encouragement and conversation, which helped to make the kms pass more quickly than I thought they would.
Well, I guess that my stubborn streak for once has taken me in a positive direction. To say that I became hooked that weekend would be an understatement. Just ask my friends and family and they will tell you. To be honest, I can't believe that a year has already passed. So here's to us on our one year anniversary, and to the many, many more anniversaries I plan on celebrating with you!
