The morning was beautiful!  We met at Elgin and Leslie and had a group of 7 heading up for Lake Simcoe. It all started when I initiated a sprint(surprised?) as we were getting close to the lake & Dave B and Joe followed.. then it happened!  Dave's rear derailleur made it's way into his wheel and exploded.  We manage to fix it with a chain break tool and a power link - converted to single speed McGyver styles and he rode up and back in one gear.  20-1 as Dave would put it. Oh, forgot to mention, the hanger was in two pieces and was being held on my the rear QR!

Next we headed up to the lake and the girls decided to take a swim(see pics).  We made it back all safe and sound.  Group cohesion was amazing.

How were the other group`s rides?  Comments welcome.

Another grand day out! Pretty darn hot on the way home though, I was feeling it... how many water stops did we make anyway? Oh, and the Black River Coffee Shop is THE place to stop! Good coffee and air conditioning...

A great ride for the group that started at grinder and did a "short-turn" at herald road over to 9th line and down to stouffville, then reesor. my garmin suggested we did 120.6kms with an average speed of 30.3km/h. Quite pleased that we got back before the heat really set in for the day although it was showing 35 by the time we got back into the city. For those interested, this month's Runner's World has a great article on racing in the heat. While it is focused on runner's clearly applicable to all of us exerting ourselves in the heat.

I would suggest this a very good read for recognizing heat issues and how to combat them.

Maybe a flaw in the hanger.... Get an aftermarket version that is machined. It'll be stronger. I'm pretty sure if you go on google search this problem, it'll have happened before.

Dave's broke after the sprint as well. Weird.

Enjoyed the 120km route, especially Herald and Ninth south.  Hope that those who went north to Simcoe stayed cool.  Tom, glad you made it home okay.

QB thanks for the link to the article, sensible advice - drink lots (with electrolytes), drink regularly, exercise at a lower effort.  As for pre-event acclimatizing, I think it might be late, we seem to be in the middle of the heat!

It was an excellent ride and enjoy the route as well, moderate pace. Excellent group, thanks Dan.

Mel and I did an unofficial Stoufville ride and made it back before the heat got oppressive. It was a lovely morning, and so much of the route was on shady country roads - gorgeous! We really enjoyed our ride.

Saw two friendly BCC guys - Peter Skalenda and Steve Fantaske - who caught up to us, and before disappearing into the distance stopped to keep us company on the ride for several minutes - thanks guys!

We also had a nice surprise at Love of Joe when the short-turn Simcoe group rolled in as we sat down with our coffee! Jeff, QB, Emile, Paul M,... so nice to see you guys, and you all looked seriously pro in your BCC kits! Glad everyone had a great ride - we sure did!
