Hi everyone. I hope everyone is having a good season so far.
For anyone who has kids who ride, I want to point out the Ontario Youth Cup races that are available. Out of the six races, four are pretty close to Toronto and look like great events.
The races are available for any kids turning 9 this year or older. They typically have 2-year age categories.
Events are run on a closed course, so no worries about cars.
The races consist of a time trial, a criterium race and a skills challenge if you wish, so lots of bang for your buck.
For example at the May 16th race just north of the city in the squirt category (which my son is doing), they do a 1.5 km time trial and a 10.5 km criterium and if we have time, he'll try the skills challenge as well. Distances increase with age.
One downside to the youth cup is the pricing - you have to have a citizen's permit (or UCI license) to do these events, so in addition to the $35 entry fee, which is quite reasonable, you also have to pay $40 for a citizen's permit unless your child already has one.
That works out well if the kid is competing in multiple events, but for someone who just wants to do one race - it's bloody expensive ($75). That's an area where the cycling people need to come up with a similar model to the kids triathlons which are normally about $40 all in for each event. That said, the youth cup events offer quite a bit more than the triathlons.
Here is the season schedule dates and general locations:
May 16 - 404 & Elgin Mills
May 30 - Barrie
June 13 - End of 404 near Lake Simcoe
July 4 - Windsor
Aug 3 - Caledon (just north of Brampton)
Sept 13 - London
Hope to see some of you at the races!
You can look on the OCA calendar for more event details.
